Family Sushi Dinner in NYC

A Calm Midtown East Dining Room With Real Sushi for the Grown-Ups

Bringing the family out for sushi in Manhattan usually means one of two trade-offs: the loud, kid-friendly chain where the fish is an afterthought, or the silent counter where you spend the meal worrying about whether your eight-year-old is going to ask for the WiFi password. Atto Sushi sits comfortably between those poles. We're a serious Edomae-style omakase counter, but the dining area is calm and family-sized — a Midtown East spot where the grown-ups get the sushi they actually want, and the kids find plenty they'll happily eat.

What Makes It Work for Families

The room is small enough to feel intimate and quiet enough for conversation across the table, but not so hushed that a kid asking a normal-volume question becomes a scene. Tables comfortably seat two to six. The à la carte menu — nigiri, sashimi, rolls, cooked appetizers, miso soup, edamame, salads — lets every person at the table order exactly what they want. There is no requirement to commit to omakase.

Ordering for Kids (Even Picky Ones)

Kids who like sushi can order familiar nigiri (salmon, tuna, shrimp, yellowtail) one piece at a time. For kids who haven't fully crossed into raw fish yet, the menu has cooked options that feel like sushi-restaurant food without requiring a leap: shrimp tempura, edamame, miso soup, seaweed salad, house salad, and rolls with cooked ingredients. The Hachi Set (8 nigiri + 1 roll for $30) often works as a perfectly portioned older-kid or pre-teen entrée.

If anyone in the family has allergies, dietary restrictions, or a specific aversion, mention it when you reserve. The kitchen accommodates restrictions when given a heads-up.

Edomae Sushi for the Adults at the Table

While the kids are working through their tempura and salmon nigiri, the adults can actually have a real sushi dinner. À la carte aged tuna, seasonal sashimi, premium nigiri pieces, sake by the glass, Japanese beer. If you have the time and the patience at the table, two of the adults can split a Lunch Omakase or Dinner Omakase while the kids order off the menu. It's not unusual.

When to Come

For families, the easiest reservations are early-evening seatings — the 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM window on weekdays, or the early Saturday dinner slot at 5:30 PM. The room is less crowded, the pace is comfortable, and the kids aren't competing with their own bedtimes. Saturday lunch is not available, but Friday lunch (11:00 AM–2:45 PM) works for a school-holiday or summer weekday treat.
